Lama Surya Das
Practical Buddhism

"We all have a tendency to define and identify ourselves by our attachments--resumes, clothes, job, title, social status, acaemic accomplishments,..Often we take our first steps on the spiritual path because we realize that we don't want to do this any longer.."
Lama Surya Das

Believe it or not, it is possible to structure your day to make time to connect with the sacred. On our show, Lama Surya Das and Sheri Meyers Gantman explore the pragmatic applications of Buddhism and explain how adopting spiritual practices such as meditation can help you stay connected to the sacred in yourself and bring you the relaxation, centeredness and internal quiet so lacking in today's fast paced world.

According to Lama Surya Das, "The key to building a spiritual life, is living a spiritual life--each and everyday." It's not as hard as you think. You can use the elements, resources and tools already around you. For example, you can begin to awaken your connection to the sacred by applying enlightened principles such as being more mindful and kind at work, doing inner work, having a sense of humor, paying attention to exercise and diet and living a more healthy, sane and loving life .

Making time each day for practices like meditation, yoga, visualization and prayers can help you find your own inner truth and that beautiful inner incandescence that is your true spiritual nature.

Lama Surya Das is one of the foremost Western Buddhist meditation teachers and scholars. He's a walking encyclopedia of Buddhism, and also a hip and regular guy. Born Jeffrey Miller, raised in Long Island, where he celebrated his bar mitzvah and earned letters in basketball, baseball and soccer has been a seeker throughout his life. While a student in college, he attended antiwar protests, marched on Washington and attended Woodstock. After graduating from college, he traveled throughout Europe and the East, and he has spent nearly thirty years studying Zen, vipassana, yoga and Tibetan Buddhism with the greatest teachers of our age. This one-time Bar Mitzvah boy became an adviser to the Dalai Lama.

Today, Lama Surya Das teaches and lectures around the world, conducting dozens of meditations retreats and workshops. Lama Surya Das is the author of "Awakening to the Sacred: Creating a Spiritual Life from Scratch,"  "Awakening the Buddha Within: Eight Steps to Enlightenment" and his latest book is "Letting Go of the Person You Used to Be." He is revitalizing Buddhism in an American context and believes that we can achieve nirvana in a matter of years, not lifetimes.
