Straight From the Heart - Personal Growth

You can't predict
when joy will come
you might have all the right
accessories
the wine, the woman, the song
on the jukebox
you might even be wearing
your special hat
that makes you look like
Brad Pitt
but the emptiness
clings to your chest
like a starfish
you can't make it happen
it is not the accessories
or the pleasures you arrange
like a chess game
it is the mystery
speaking to you
in the strangest hours
the employee at the hardware store
who remembers your name
the bird you watch
eat a crumb of your muffin
that absently fell to the ground
joy is a strange phenomena
it cannot be rehearsed
or planned
it is the force that protects you
from the demons
in your head
and the bills on your desk
nothing can conquer joy
nothing can penetrate
the fortress of happiness
and if you really think about it
joy is the only thing that has kept you going
you wait for it
you go to extreme measures
to touch its outermost light
joy is what keeps you in the game
and when it cannot be found
you fall leaf-like to the ground
until joy catches you
like the wind
and that my friends
is another story
